Brake pads are flat, rectangular components that create friction against the brake motors to slow your car down when you hit the brake pedal.

All types of drives have the same amount of brakes. However, there are two types that have their own purpose. While the front pads are responsible for most of a car's braking force, the rear pads are built to stabilize the front, especially during emergency stops or when carrying heavy loads.

Maintaining Your Front Pads vs Rear Pads

A brake kit typically consists of brake calipers, discs, and pads that can either upgrade or replace your existing braking system. Though it has everything you need to change your brakes, your front pads will need more care than the rear.

Your brake pads are placed around your wheels. If there's a burning smell or a chemical odor coming from this area, then it's likely that your pads are damaged or overheated. Grinding and screeching noises are also key signs of this problem.

Cleaning is definitely not an issue for your brakes, as they're built to withstand harsh environments. Use a brake cleaner spray and a brake pad cleaning brush, or maybe a wire brush, to scrub away contaminants when these symptoms persist.

Make sure to replace your brake pads every 3 or so years. A routine check should be held once a year to check for visual signs of damage and wear.
